Duties and Responsibilities

The Town Clerk serves as a resource for others within the community by providing direction, guidance, information and assistance. The office often provides the professional link between residents, local governing bodies and State agencies.

The City Charter and the Connecticut General Statutes define the Town Clerk’s duties and functions. The Town Clerk is the official who is responsible for the preservation and safekeeping of the City’s official records and documents.

People from all political parties, special interest groups, and others regularly request information and guidance from the Town Clerk. The Town Clerk and staff are committed to providing that information in an impartial, friendly, and helpful way. And if we don’t know the answer, we’ll do our very best to help you find one!

Over the years the Town Clerk has become the hub of government, the direct link between the citizens and the government. The Clerk is the historian of the community, for the entire recorded history of the City and its people in its care.

No other office in municipal service has so many contacts. Average citizens call upon the Clerk’s office, almost daily, for some service or information. The Town Clerk’s work is not spectacular, but demands versatility, alertness, accuracy, and no end of patience. The public may not realize how many loose ends this office pulls together.
